About this watch

This automatic Gold Cap Seamaster De Ville dating from c.1966 comes in lovely all-original condition. Featuring a white dial, gold hands and markers plus gold-capped case, this timepiece somehow succeeds in being simultaneously ostentatious yet subtly understated.

The movement (ref. 166020, 19,800 bph – 5.5 beats per second – 17 jewels, caliber 562, with Incabloc shock protection and sweep seconds). The 34mm gold-capped case (with famous sea-horse Seamaster logo on the back) and crown are signed. We have replaced the strap with a new brown lizard band.

A little history: 1966 was the year that England won the World Cup, the Beatles made ‘Help!’, Time magazine first used the phrase ‘Swinging London’, and hovercraft services began plying the Channel. Two years before, ‘Goldfinger’ had paved the way for Bond/spy movies as we know them today, and gold (as if it needed it) had enjoyed a major boost in popularity.

With its slim, elegant profile, the 1960s De Ville epitomised the highly functional dress watch, proving to be one of Omega’s most important sellers right into the 1970s. Famous Omega wearers have included John F. Kennedy and Buzz Aldrin. And Don Draper was shown wearing an Omega Seamaster De Ville during season 5 of Mad Men.
