About this watch
Steeped in a history which dates back to 1945, this quality 1991 Rolex DateJust is an excellent example of Rolex’s versatility and style in the development of a high-performing watch line. With a simple, yet handsome, grey dial, and silver markers it maintains an understated elegance, which is often hard to find. Set in a 35mm case, reference 16220, it has a cyclops magnifier over the date set window on the sapphire crystal, an automatic 3135 movement and a screw-down crown.
With excellent timekeeping this is an exceptional model.
Rolex first manufactured the Datejust in 1945 to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary. It was the first wristwatch with an automatically changing date function, hence the name, making it a game changer in its day. The first model was only made available in yellow gold, with a corresponding good Jubilee bracelet and was referenced 4467. The cyclops magnifier, which can be seen in the 1991 model, first dates to 1955 and the use of the name ‘Datejust’ on the dial, has been consistent since the 6074 and 6075 models, prior to which it was used intermittently.
